Layoff aren’t the answer (yeah, right)…
CNN quotes some economists about the recent wave of layoffs. Their conclusion is that layoffs are a short-sighted, short-term solution that is counterproductive in the long term.
While I agree in principle, I'm willing to bet these economists have never had to choose between keeping people employed or keeping their business in business. Sure, in the big scheme of the universe, keeping people employed greases the wheels of the economy. And it is easier to cut employees than many other things a business could do. But, when your back is against a wall, sometimes you've got no choice but to do layoffs.
Maybe instead of pontificating, these economists could do something useful and work to change a financial system that rewards companies for layoffs with higher stock prices?
