I have a friend who is currently unemployed and is having a terrible time finding work. He's highly educated and intelligent with an MBA. And he's had to work some low-wage jobs just to bring in a paycheck. He's very discouraged about his job prospects. So along comes this discouraging story (via MSNBC.com) listing the "8 lowest-paying jobs in America." To me, what's discouraging about this list is that many of these jobs are on lists of projected future employment growth.

The 8 lowest-paying jobs are:

Food preparation and serving workers, including fast food (The occupation is now the fourth largest in the country with 2.7 million workers.)
Dishwashers
Cashiers (The job is No. 2 on the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s list of biggest occupations with a workforce of about 3.3 million, behind only retail sales people with 4.2 million.)
Hosts and hostesses
Amusement park attendants
Movie theater ushers, ticket takers — Paying more for movie tickets? That money's not giving these folks bigger paychecks. (The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects jobs for ushers and ticket takers to jump nearly 12 percent in the next 10 years. Woo hoo!)
Farm workers (“Job opportunities for agricultural worker occupations should be abundant because large numbers of workers leave these jobs due to their low wages and physical demands.”)
Personal and home care aides (The job opportunities in this profession are expected to skyrocket by nearly 50 percent in the next 10 years)

This is why unions are still needed…

Despite the general attitude that unions are archaic and have outlived their usefulness, I think this story might have had a far different outcome had there been a union watching out for employees' interests. Working in a meat processing plant has got to be one of the worst jobs there is.

...in case you were wondering. Notice that there seems to be a bias for sedentary, white collar type jobs over the more physically demanding jobs. Class bias? I'm sure you'll find people in both camps who either love their jobs or hate them.

The 10 worst jobs in the world according to CareerCast.com:

1. Lumberjack
Fells, cuts, and transports timber to be processed into lumber, paper, and other wood products.

2. Dairy Farmer
Directs and takes part in activities involved in the raising of cattle for milk production.

3. Taxi Driver
Operates a taxi cab over the streets and roads of a municipality, picking up and dropping off passengers by request.

4. Seaman
May perform any number of tasks involved in the operation of ships, boats, barges, or dredges.

5. Emergency Medical Technician
Attends to situations which demand immediate medical attention, such as automobile accidents, heart attacks, and gunshot wounds.

6. Roofer
Installs roofs on new buildings, performs repairs on old roofs, and re-roofs old buildings.

7. Garbage Collector
Collects refuse on a designated municipal route, and transports trash to disposal plants or landfill areas.

8. Welder
Joins or repairs metal surfaces through the application of heat.

9. Roustabout
Performs routine physical labor and maintenance on oil rigs and pipelines, both on and off shore.

10. Ironworker
Raises the steel framework of buildings, bridges, and other structures.
